The afterschool grind resumes

So Sister's in third grade now, as of last week, and we're settling into our afternoon routine all over again. We walk home from school, have a snack, dismantle the backpack contents, start on homework. I'm beginning to get alarm bells about the homework all of a sudden, though. I've never thought of myself as bad at math--except for maybe high school calculus which I nearly flunked--but just what the hell are "fact families" and "addends?" THAT"S third grade math?! I had to look it up on-line so as not to embarass myself calling her teacher. I honestly had no clue at all.

Maybe I should be reading ahead or something. Sheesh.

Don't feel bad at all. I homeschooled my 10 and 11 year old k4 and k5 and I actually had to go into the private school they attend now and ask questions. My 15 year came home from school and asked me if I wanted him to teach me new math. NEW MATH! I said, "Listen, I don't get the old math, so how can you teach me the new math." I'm telling you i have been told that I don't know all the prepositions (I guess there are some new ones?) and I certainly don't know how to "graph a sentence." So it's not just you. My 5th and 6th graders are doing pre-algebra and we didn't do that until the 7th or 8th grade. I'm sheeshin' with ya.

Yeah, I am so in big, big trouble. A is going to learn pretty fast that her Dad and I have very different skills when it comes to academics.

I'll be in trouble too, Hopefully I'll have Boo's daddy around still for him to do that part! Otherwise he'll learn how to use the calculator with me!

Math - do we need to be good at math for grade three. My oldest is in grade three.

I just find that the terms for math have changed
subtraction = take away
silly things like that.
I mean it's math, how can you change it?

You'll figure it out. Now stop looking ahead. Breath and enjoy the new chapter of your life.
