No rest for mama

One thing I never particularly wanted to do as a parent was the whole family bed co-sleeping thing. I like plenty of space to roll around, a pillow between my knees, and a particular sleep position that renders the boobies inaccessible to babies. Which is why I'm puzzled to all of a sudden find myself bringing a nearly 6-month old baby into bed with me every night around 3:00 or 4:00. I can't sleep worth a damn with her nursing, but she's incredibly cute and cuddly, lying there in her crib in the dark trying to charm me into playing with her. I think to myself, "Awwwww!" and, "Well, she's going to scream for the next hour if I just leave her there...."

Probably what I should do is stop this habit now before it goes on for too much longer. But that would involve a few nights of crying and I already get so little freakin' sleep as it is!

Where's my way out of this? And why do my kids not like to sleep as much as I do? Sleep is SO delicious, is it not?

I say relax about it, if possible. Either way it sounds like you aren't sleeping much at that point. When they are grown you will look back on that with great fondness (ask me, it was 18 years ago). When you have had enough, you will endure the separation cries, as necessary. It is amazing to me that it has been 18 years since I first went through all that. And to put it all in perspective...my youngest is nearly 13. And because I know that closeness will all be over soon, I love it when she comes to snuggle in bed. Then...we both sleep wonderfully.

Sleep is Delicious, I agree. Which is why I'm so nervous about this new baby and the inevitable lack of sleep I'll be getting then. (Even more so than now...) We will have the baby in a bassinet in our room, which I'm hoping won't be too terrible since last time A was in her own room next door and I don't know what I would have done without the space... Maybe I won't be so freaky next time...

But you. I think everything will be fine. She will grow out of this habit and if you get more rest this way then so be it.

Sleep is so so sweet. But I know what you mean. The Rabbit STILL loves to crawl into bed with us (which, I admit, I love too.) But there's no chance I can sleep with her thrashing around next to me. Sigh. Sometimes, I sneak away and sleep in HER bed. But usually I try to snuggle her up, and catch a few winks. I know in a few years this is all over, and I will SO miss it.

we just moved charlie to a twin bed and i must admit - one of the things i love about it is that now when he wants me to lay down with him, i can. (i mean, have you ever seen a seven month pregnant woman trying to climb into a crib??) he's really quite snuggly.

i'm a believer in teaching kids to sleep independently, but i gotta say - as others have said - I know they're not going to want to snuggle with mama forever, so I'm taking it when I can.

I made that mistake with my 12 year old. When she was 8 months, she climbed out of her crib, so I let her sleep with me. I got tired of putting her back in the bed, and she then slept with me for the next three long years!!!!!
