Sister growing up

Sister has all of a sudden begun to care about her appearance. She's requested that I get a book about hairstyles so she can begin experimenting with her hair which she's decided to grow long. She enjoys mixing up beauty potions from a kit she received for Christmas--toners and bath oils and such. The other day she wrote up a list of her ideal spa day which cracked me up. My 9-year old! Daydreaming about her perfect spa day! The damn list was, like, a dozen items long! Hilarious. (And where can I sign up?)

But she's still a little kid, really, and doesn't quite know how to do this stuff yet. I can't wait to see how she'll come down the stairs in the morning these days. The other day, she came down with a small pigtail jutting out of the side of her head at a 60 degree angle. Just one of them, and definitely had NOT used a brush to smooth it out first. This morning she came down in leopard print capri pants, a blue sequin shirt, blue kitty-printed socks pulled HIGH up her legs, and pink and white sneakers. Bless her heart. I think I love this phase of her growing up.

Better than the super low-rise jeans and belly shirts that she'll want to wear soon, huh? Yeah.

Up until this year I would buy clothes for my daughter w/o her being with me to try on at the house. Now she's so opinionated I don't dare.
She requests Old Navy, Limited 2 and Justice gift cards for Christmas and birthdays. Thank goodness she's still modest.

Yea, MUCH better than the alternative. My 4 year old dresses herself, and sometimes... well, let's just say she will put a skirt over jeans if it's cold outside, and a too-small shirt cause it's her favorite. My 12-year old told her she looked ugly. Man oh man, I was MAD! Talk about hurting a little girls feelings! It was so sad.

Skirts with jeans (and dresses with jeans) are all the rage at my house this winter. Some outfits my little girls pull together are rather cute even.

My 9 year old is finally caring enough to remember to brush her hair and teeth without being asked though- that's huge for her. I'm waiting for her to learn to keep her room clean next (does that ever happen?)

That is so sweet. I actually remember doing my own side-pony in elementary school and remember thinking I was so cool because I could do my own hair. And no worries, I didn't use a brush either and I am pretty certain it pretty silly from all angles, except from my view. :)

A LOT better! When we lived in our apartment, there was a girl close to my son's age (he was ten at the time) and she was in low-rise jeans and a belly shirt. I could NOT believe my eyes.

Yeah, it sucks that boys don't really go through a stage like that with dressing. Like, you wouldn't worry if a boy had his underwear hanging out of his pants. (Everyone just chuckles to themselves) Girls on the other hand can't pull that off without coming of as slutty. Sigh. I hope Miss A takes after me. (as I dressed in high school) Baggy and retro. Not only was it SO not slutty, it also really cut back on the number of boyfriends I attracted. I must have saved my mom tons of trouble!

My two haven't got into labels yet, praise be. I do let them dress themselves sometimes (out of sheer laziness) and the end result is always interesting. Something deep inside me shrieks when I see a pink ballet tutu matched with orange tights and a hand-knitted red jumper unravelling at the seams, but you know what, if they're pleased with themselves (and they are always are) then who cares?
